At Goodspeed Grace (played by Sandy Faison) had a solo in the second act called "He Doesn't Know I'm Alive" (which surfaced again briefly in Annie 2: MHR) in which she is singing about Warbucks. While she is singing, Drake brings her a tray with cubes of cheese on it, and all the time she is doing the song, she is eating these pieces of cheese, and the audience loves it! Later in the act, Warbucks tells Grace to get things ready for the adoption party and reels off a list, and she adds, "...and cheese!" Of course, he has no idea what she is talking about, since he was offstage during the singing of her song. But the audience knows why she said that, and they laugh. By the time the show got to Broadway, the song had been cut, but Martin had loved the way Sandy Faison delivered the "and cheese" line, and as an "in" joke for her, he left the line in the script. Good luck with your production!
